Belfius: secure access to the locks of the safes integrated in the cash dispensers (ATM terminals)

Project:

As the 2nd largest bank-insurer in Belgium and the 1st financial partner of the public sector, Belfius operates a network of 530 bank branches, each with an average of 5 safes (3 ATMs and 2 others). Each of them has to be opened and closed at least once a day, which represents a minimum of 2,500 daily operations to be managed in a secure manner.

Challenges and issues

Centralized management of a minimum of 5,000 safe lock opening and closing operations per day by a large number of users (branch staff and cash couriers) 
Enhanced security through the use of One Time Codes (OTCs) delivered daily to users for collection by phone.  
Multilingual management of agent conversations in English and Dutch.

Solution implemented:

  • Voicebot managing secure user transactions required by phone to open and close the locks of the safes by identifying itself by user code coupled with a unique opening code issued daily 
  • Verification of the respect of the sequencing and timing of these procedures 
  • Integration plugins for the KABA centralized lock management server 
  • Integration with the Gensys telephone platform in use at Belfius Bank

Results and Benefits:

Increased security: no more attacks in agencies since the solution was deployed in 2013.
Substantial reduction in operating costs, thanks to the centralized administration of the locks by the customer's teams, without the need for any further intervention in the agencies
